The company is organised into the following business units:

Existing Nuclear operates eight nuclear power stations in the UK with a combined capacity of almost 9,000 megawatts – electricity that is vital to the UK economy.

Nuclear New Build which is tasked with the delivery of the new generation of nuclear plants in line with EDF’s global programme of producing safe, affordable, reliable, low-carbon production of electricity in the UK.

Energy Sourcing and Customer Supply runs power stations and wind farms, buys and sells power to meet future generation and customer needs and deals with all our energy customers.

Our history

EDF Energy as we know it today was born in 2003

But our history actually began during the years leading up to 2002, when three energy companies ─ SEEBoard, London Energy and SWEB ─ were brought together.

Since then, we've grown steadily, integrating and streamlining our operations to become more responsive and effective in a fast-changing marketplace.

The combination of EDF Energy and British Energy in 2009 forms one of the UK’s largest energy companies. The combined business is the UK’s largest producer of electricity.

We’re now involved in some of the UK’s most important projects and developments. Growing to become one of the country’s largest energy companies in such a short time is an impressive achievement.

EDF Energy: a brief history of acquisitions and mergers

  • London Electricity, merged - November 1998
  • SWEB supply business, merged - July 1999
  • Sutton Bridge Power Station, acquired - April 2000
  • Cottam Power Station, acquired - December 2000
  • West Burton Power Station, acquired- December 2001

We are an energy company with a difference.

We want to help you understand your energy usage, reduce your carbon footprint and ensure you receive accurate bills.

What's so exciting about energy, you ask? Well, quite a lot actually! We are at the forefront of some exciting changes in the energy industry and we are being smart about looking after our customers.

"We know that First Utility is going to resonate with UK consumers' concerns regarding rising fuel prices. From a financial perspective, when householders are counting the pennies and not looking forward to a winter of high energy bills, the First Utility smart metering service means they can save money by reducing wasted energy - the cheapest energy unit is the one you have not used!" Mark Daeche, co-founder of First Utility.

Our policies

Providing the best possible customer care is one of our core aims at First Utility. We appreciate that the energy industry can sometimes be confusing, clouded in technical terms and processes, so we think it's important that we let you know exactly what we will do for you, and what you can do if you experience any problems.

Our promise to you

As part of this commitment to customer service we have a set of procedures and standards that we follow.

Our vision: Smarter services for life

Here at First Utility we strive to be smarter.

Smart meters are central to our smart service. Our meters use cutting edge technology to automatically submit readings to our head office. We then take your home or business consumption information, and present it back to you in a clear and meaningful way, so that they can fully understand your energy usage. It is this detailed historical data that drives changes in habits, not the novelty of seeing consumption spike when you turn the lights on provided by a home display or energy monitoring unit

But being smarter isn’t just about supplying smart meters, it’s about being smarter in every aspect of our business, from the software we use to provide the backbone to our operations, to the information we provide to our customers. Being smart to us means being more efficient, more innovative and more customer-focused than our competitors, providing the best service possible to our customers.

Mark Daeche, founder and CEO of First Utility believes strongly in providing a smarter energy supply to UK households. The Guardian newspaper recently interviewed Mark to find out what drives him to move the energy industry forward, the following is an excerpt from this interview:

“Do you know how big your power bill was for that cold winter? Do you know how much more energy you were using? Do you sometimes think about changing tariff, and then give up in despair at the complexity?"

"Mark Daeche understands. He wants to make the energy meter in your house smarter so that, rather than just telling you how much you’ve used, it will interact with you power supplier. It could also tell you how much you’ve used for washing, or how much for home entertainment. One day you might even be able to set your washing machine to run when the instantaneous spot price of electricity falls below a certain amount.”

About Us

We were the first supplier to offer 100% renewable electricity to UK households when we were founded back in 1999. Over a decade later, all other suppliers still rely on electricity generated using fossil fuels or nuclear power. Good Energy's electricity is sourced purely from the wind, water, sun and through sustainable biogeneration.

But more than simply supplying 100% renewable electricity, we're helping the UK achieve a future that's powered purely by renewables. There’s a lot to do; it requires fundamental changes to the way energy is generated and used in the UK. But we believe it’s possible. And there’s a growing body of research, including our own, proving that it is.

Part of the Good Energy Group, we’re owned by around 1,700 shareholders, 90% of whom are Good Energy customers. You can find out more about our board and ownership here.

Our people

Good Energy isn’t just a business. Founded with one clear goal – to make a difference to climate change – we support and encourage everyone who works here to play a part in achieving a future powered purely by renewables.

If you think you’d like to be a member of the Good Energy team, click here to see what opportunities are currently available. We’d love to hear from you.

The Good Energy Academy

Launched in October 2009 and initially introduced into our Customer Care Team, the Academy has now been extended to include every employee in the company so that we’re all able to provide a personal and professional service with in-depth knowledge spanning all aspects of a brighter energy future.
That means, from generating your own electricity, to top-notch energy efficiency advice, they’ve got the answer. Or can help you to find it. We call it Fluent in Energy.

Our values

Our founder and CEO Juliet Davenport set up Good Energy because of a determined desire to tackle climate change.

She wanted to offer consumers the opportunity to make a better choice about where they bought their electricity – from a 100% renewable electricity supplier dedicated to growing renewable energy generation in the UK.

We’re committed to running our business responsibly, and ensuring it has a positive impact on our employees, our customers and our planet is a key part of achieving our aim of building a renewable energy future. It has informed every decision we have made from the very beginning.

Proud of our strong sense of identity and ethical commitment, and determined to be as transparent as possible with our activities, we produce a values report every year to provide a summary of our performance in relation to the environment and our stakeholders. Most importantly, it incorporates an independent verification report to ensure that our claims about the 100% renewable electricity that we supply are completely true.

From the pens we write with to the way we buy our energy, our values are woven into every aspect of what Good Energy is and does. And not the type to rest on our laurels, we aspire to improve our environmental performance year on year.

We’re always delighted to win awards. It lets us know that we’re on the right track and gives us an extra burst of inspiration to keep working towards a renewable future.

About Us

A business with a difference

We are not like other green energy providers. We challenge the idea that ‘being green’ is all about making a big commitment, about making an extra effort, and paying extra costs.

Indeed, companies often talk about green energy as an 'alternative'. On the contrary, green energy makes sense for everyone, and we want to make it mainstream.

So, our prices are competitive not only within the green market, but also the entire utilities industry. By minimising the cost and effort it takes to switch, we aim to remove all obstacles to going green.

And because we want to give you even more reason to switch, we allow our customers to become shareholders for free.

Put simply: we do care about the environment, but we are not idealists with our heads in the clouds. We are down to earth, in every sense.

Customer Promise

Here at Green Energy UK we aim to give you the best possible standards of customer service. Our goal is not simply to have satisfied customers; we want delighted ones!

We think you deserve great service not just from us but also from the electricity distributors who form part of the energy network. We have therefore set out the minimum standards you can expect from us both in our Customer Promise.

At Green Energy UK, our aim is to always exceed these targets but in the rare event that we don’t, we - or the electricity distributors – will pay you compensation.

Sharing our business

Here at Green Energy UK, we make you part of our business for free. For no cost whatsoever, you are entitled to shares. Why’s that, I hear you ask? Well, it may sound crazy, but this is our way of rewarding our customers for choosing to go green.

And not just that – we want our customers to be more than mere consumers, but instead to take an active role in shaping their energy supply. As shareholders, every one of you is invited to tell us your thoughts at our AGM, and you'll also be able to get updates on how we're doing financially. No corporate smoke and mirrors here, but an open and honest approach to doing business.

About Us

LoCO2 Energy is an independent, family-run British renewable energy and low-carbon electricity supplier.

We were founded in 2009 but we have been active in the renewable energy industry for more than a decade (you can read more about our history elsewhere).

We're a young company with a fresh approach to providing electricity. We believe energy should be green, cheap and delivered with prompt and cheerful customer service.

If you wish to compare gas and electricity prices click here
If you wish to compare electricity prices only click here

Not only this but, through our sister business TLS Hydro, we own and operate our own hydropower stations throughout the UK.

Working in the electricity industry, we noticed that customers were given two broad choices: opt for dirt-cheap brown electricity and put up with poor customer service; or pay a king's ransom for green energy from an independent supplier.

Spotting an obvious gap in the market, we decided we could offer sensibly priced renewable electricity with an excellent customer service ethic.

Our three renewable electricity tariffs finally offer the choice to match your environmental concerns to your budget.

Electricity supply is a fundamental part of everyone's life. It can also be complicated and stressful. If you need further reassurance, then call us on 0845 074 3601 or drop us an email.

LoCO2 Energy History

Dr Anthony Robert (Bob) Middleton, Chief Executive of LoCO2 Energy has spent most of his career in the gas and electricity industry, previously holding positions at BP and Eastern Electricity.

In 1997, he founded the group of companies that now comprises TradeLink Solutions Ltd. Bob wanted to take his in-depth knowledge of the electricity industry and apply it to the renewable energy sector as a consultant and energy trader.

In 1999, Bob set up TLS Hydro, a hydropower development company, and bought a ramshackle old hydro facility at Balgonie, eastern Scotland. Since then, TLS Hydro has grown, building, renovating and buying more hydro-electric facilities through the UK.

LoCO2 Energy was set up in 2009. By incorporating LoCO2 Energy, Bob has created a vertically integrated group of companies that generate, trade and sell renewable electricity. The LoCO2 Energy team is highly skilled and knowledgeable with experience in both the renewable energy and retail electricity sectors.

This means that you are in the very best hands when it comes to needing advice about switching to a renewable and low-carbon electricity supplier.

Our customer service promise

The electricity industry is riddled with poor customer service.

Everyone at LoCO2 Energy has been a customer of an electricity supplier. We have first-hand experience of where things go wrong. Below are just a few examples we came up with:

  • Long waits to speak to people
  • Endless navigation options on touch-tone phones
  • Feckless call-centre employees
  • Barrages of confusing electricity industry jargon
  • Unfair direct debits with customers building up large credits with their suppliers; or very low direct debits and sudden unexpected requests for hundreds of pounds.
  • Inaccurate and/or confusing bills

So when we sat down and talked through how our new renewable electricity company would work, customer service was at the top of the list.

Our customer service promises to you are:

  • When you call, you will speak to a member of the team at the heart of the business straight away. We run no call centres and you will reach our offices immediately.
  • Many of our customers will get to know the customer service team by name and often ask for a particular person.
  • No touch tone navigation. When we answer, our expert team will deal with your call on a case-by-case basis
  • We will explain any industry jargon. We have a no-nonsense approach.
  • You can raise or lower the direct debit as you see fit and we will be happy to issue you a cheque or do a bank transfer if you build up a credit. Our direct debits are otherwise set by an annual average.
  • Crystal clear bills. We have invested a great deal in our new billing software. It's so good, we've unofficially dubbed it the 'magic software'. Nonetheless, each bill is checked by a person to make sure it makes sense.
