About Us

Like most good ideas, Ovo was created to solve a problem.

Our founder, Stephen Fitzpatrick, was so fed up dealing with large energy companies with complicated, expensive and confusing tariffs he decided to start his own.

A big step. Especially as Stephen’s background wasn’t in the energy business. But that meant he didn’t start with any preconception of how things are ‘normally’ done. Just a vision on how things ‘should’ be done.

In Stephen’s words: “I just couldn’t understand why the energy business was so complex and service so poor. Everyone kept telling me it wouldn’t be possible for someone outside of the industry to come in and make energy cheaper, greener and simpler. I’m very pleased to have proved them wrong!”

It’s because Stephen was thinking like a customer that the business is built around the idea of making your life as simple as possible. That’s what makes dealing with us so much easier… and nicer.

We’ve spent lots of time scratching our heads and writing a list of what the ideal energy company would be like; what they’d promise, what they’d do and what they’d not do – in short, what Ovo should be like.

  • We promise to do what we say we will. We know this is easier said than done, but we try very hard every day to make sure you’ll never regret switching to Ovo. We try our best every day to keep this simple promise.

Things we will always do:

  • We will always try and find better ways to do things. Ovo started because we were convinced there was a better way of offering energy. Finding better ways of doing things is what drives us every day.
  • We will always offer you the best pricing we can. Our prices are linked directly to the cost of the energy wholesale market. We keep our operating costs low so that we can pass on more savings to you.
  • We will always admit when we’re wrong. No one’s perfect and we do occasionally make mistakes, but we’ll always hold our hands up, accept responsibility and sort it out as quickly as possible.

Things we will never do:

  • We will never try to trick you with clever gimmicks. Our adverts are just like us, straightforward, honest and easy to understand. If we say we’re the cheapest, it’s because we really are, we won’t try to convince you of something that isn’t true.
  • We will never try to confuse you with hidden costs. There’s nothing nasty hiding in our small print and we’ll always be totally clear with you about what you’re being charged.
  • Your tariff will never change without us telling you well in advance. We want to build a long term relationship with you, and as clear communication is a big part of any relationship, we’ll make sure we do it well.

We are committed to providing exceptional customer service by offering face-to-face advice centres in Sainsbury's stores across the UK, giving customers the choice to visit us when it suits them most. Customers can talk to our in-store Retail Energy Experts to understand how they can save money on their energy bills and receive free practical energy saving advice on our products and services tailored to their energy needs. Plus, together with Nectar we're also rewarding our customers just for having a product or service with Sainsbury's Energy.

Collect Nectar points

Sign up to Sainsbury's Energy and you can collect Nectar points on our products and services.

You need to be a Nectar account holder and register with Sainsbury's Energy to collect points. If you do not have a Nectar card, we can request one and register it for you. Offer applies to new customers who sign up to take Standard gas and electricity from Sainsbury's Energy. 2,000 points per fuel will be applied to your Nectar account 15 days after your supply start date and an additional 750 Nectar points per fuel will be applied each quarter for the first year. You must remain on supply for the fuel in question at the time the points in question are issued to receive them. The project was launched in April 2010 to support initiatives within the communities in which our employees live and work, giving staff the opportunity to make a difference to things they are passionate about outside of work.

Our Business

ScottishPower has been at the heart of energy generation & distribution in Glasgow for over 100 years. As part of the Iberdrola Group since April 2007, and headquartered in Glasgow, ScottishPower is one of the UK’s largest energy companies employing more than eight thousand people across our Generation; Transmission; Distribution and Retail sectors.

Our Generation business produces circa 26k GWh of electricity p.a. our Transmission and Distribution business owns and operates our transmission and distribution network with around 3.3 million customers whilst our Retail business supplies gas and electricity to over 5 million customers.

Today, as part of the Iberdrola group of companies, ScottishPower is also a world leader in renewable energy and the 5th largest energy company in the world. Our sister company ScottishPower Renewables, also based in Glasgow, is the UK's largest developer of onshore wind farms with over 30 wind farms fully operational, under construction or in planning.

Energy Networks

SP Energy Networks is responsible for:

  • Restoring supply as quickly as possible should a fault occur on the network
  • Providing new connections to the network
  • Maintaining the performance and safe condition of the network

Energy Retail

The cost of your bill is more than just the price of your energy

At ScottishPower we aim to look after your energy needs and make sure you have all the information you might need about your energy supply.

Our Energy Retail business supplies gas and electricity to around 5.2m customers across the UK, with a track record of customer retention and product innovation.

Energy Retail manages pricing, selling, metering, billing, customer service and cash collection for gas and electricity supply to both business and domestic customers.

Energy Retail holds our supply licences and has its own data management and metering company - SP Dataserve Ltd., who manage the data processes underpinning billing and settlement.

Energy Wholesale

Our Energy Wholesale business is focused on delivering competitive energy from across its portfolio. The range and scale of our activities include:-

Generation

Generation has responsibility for operating and maintaining our generating portfolio. Generation is organised around the physical assets – coal, gas, windfarm and hydro-electric power stations plus our Daldowie facility near Glasgow which manufactures fuel pellets from sewage sludge.

In the short-to-medium term, Generation's impact on energy management activities is primarily through agreeing and meeting production commitments (including plant efficiency, availability, flexibility and reliability targets and maintenance outage schedules).

Generation works closely with the Energy Management team to establish production forecasts, which are incorporated into the Company's energy positions and opportunities for trading.

Energy Management

Energy Management is responsible for the wholesale trading of power, gas, coal and other commodities. This team schedules generating plant and works with the Energy Retail business to set gas and electricity tariffs. They also carry out financial modelling for potential investments identified by the Commercial Development team. In the longer term, they have responsibility for developing robust strategies, operational plans, budgets and forecasts in support of the company's strategy for developing its energy portfolio.

Energy Management forecasts energy trends over the long term and works with bodies such as Ofgem and the Department of Trade and Industry to help shape the energy policy of the future.

Commercial Development

Commercial Development is responsible for originating value enhancing opportunities for the business, including bespoke energy contracts, asset acquisitions and asset developments.

Over the past couple of years this has included the acquisition of 1,000MW of modern gas generation plant at Damhead Creek (800MW) and Brighton (200MW) and the disposal of the Byley gas storage development project. This transaction included a 15-year storage contract for a substantial portion of the planned capacity.
