National Outsourcing Association Award for Corporate Social Responsibility

The volunteering efforts of colleagues in India have given disadvantaged children educational opportunities. Their innovative project won Centrica the National Outsourcing Association Award for Corporate Social Responsibility.

Centrica worked with local NGO, the OM Foundation, to construct a secondary school in Noida near Delhi. The Foundation provides education for children from poor areas where many families earn less than 3,000 rupees (£40) a month. Over 100 volunteers from our Indian call centres and agency partners, Hewitt and EXL, helped out by decorating and landscaping the school and its grounds. Employees in Glasgow, UK, and Gurgaon, India, also simultaneously ran a charity day to raise funds for the school in 2009. The school will be able to take up to 280 students through secondary education.

But Centrica's commitment doesn't end there. British Gas and EXL have made the decision to support the school for as long as we are in India. We have committed 80% of the £150,000 funding needed to run the school over the next three years.

In 2009 Centrica was judged overall winner and winner in category for the best work experience provider for companies employing more than 250 people. In 2010 Centrica was awarded best in category again beating other finalists Accenture, Barclays Capital, BP, Citigroup and Shell.

To win the award for a second consecutive year was particularly pleasing as it meant that a completely new set of judges from within industry and higher education recognised Centrica as a leading provider of work experience. With regards to how the programme is run, the judges commented on the excellent development programme offered to students, the training provision in place for line managers and the high transition of students to graduate pool.

HR Excellence Awards 2010: Most Innovative Use of Technology

A new joiner microsite with the aim to engage new staff, make sure they understood their role and the benefits available to them and help them feel positive about working for British Gas has been awarded the HR Excellence Award 2010 for Most Innovative Use of Technology. The British Gas Journey site had the longer-term goals of retaining staff for longer; reducing training time and retraining costs; reduced attrition; and lower levels of absence.

The microsite features a virtual village that can be explored with a personalised avatar. It is an initiative that could change the way people view British Gas. This is how the judges summed up this entry. "It is innovative, engaging, it meets its goals and has good links back to the business".

About Us

Ebico Ltd is a not-for-profit gas and electricity supplier aiming to offer a better, fairer deal for domestic energy to British households. We are also an expanding enterprise committed to working both for social justice and the wise use of the earth’s resources, in a variety of ways.

We supply gas and electricity throughout Britain and charge our customers the same rate, regardless of payment method, usage or whether you take one, or both, services from us. Also, we don’t have a standing charge so you know you will only be paying for what you use. Ebico might be a unique energy provider, but we’re not new! We have been trading for over 10 years, making a genuine difference to low-income households.

If you wish to compare gas and electricity prices click here
If you wish to compare electricity prices only click here

How does it work

Energy suppliers give discounts to customers who pay by Direct Debit, but charge a higher rate to customers who use prepayment meters. We feel this is unfair and wrong! The majority of households using prepayment meters are on a low income and yet these high rates are pushing more and more low income households into fuel poverty. We charge one flat rate to all, creating a fair, competitive, price for all customers and great savings, in particular for prepayment customers.

Why not sign up to our EquiGas and EquiPower tariffs? You’ll get a fair price for your home energy and be helping us get lower prices to low income households.

In A Nutshell

  • We offer fair priced gas and electricity
  • We provide one simple flat rate for all*
  • We deliver high levels of customer satisfaction**
  • We offer a full range of customer support facilities
through our supply partners, Scottish & Southern Energy Plc
  • We provide easy to read bills, online bill facilities and automated
meter read lines to update your account
  • We offer you the chance to be part of a wider community; by choosing our Equigas and Equipower tariffs you will be helping us help those who find heating and lighting their homes adequately a real challenge.

    * If your electricity meter has a fixed standing charge and unit rate, we'll refund the difference between this and the Equipower tariff.

**We recently received a 'top 2' rating in Which

Ebico Trust

The Ebico Trust for Sustainable Development

Since we launched EquiGas in 1999, Ebico has been helping householders who have to budget carefully with prepayment meters. With the Ebico Trust for Sustainable Development we aim to go one stage further. The Ebico Trust is a registered charity which enables us to support initiatives to improve the energy efficiency of the homes of low income householders and offer support and advice on saving energy – thereby reducing their fuel bills still further.

The Ebico Trust for Sustainable Development, amongst other things, financially supports local projects that carry out material improvements in the condition of properties – particularly those occupied by low incomes householders – so as to make them cheaper to heat.

We invite applications for funding from organisations who wish us to support projects that tackle fuel poverty in sustainable ways, whether by offering advice, guidance or education, or by making practical and sustainable improvements to the material conditions of properties occupied by those in, or likely to be in, fuel poverty. The Trustees also wish to support those undertaking research into fuel poverty, its incidence and the various methods by which it may be tackled.

The Trustees of the Ebico Trust for Sustainable Development meet to consider grant applications on a quarterly basis (January, April, July, October).  As a guide for applicants, the Trust has made grants ranging in size between £20k and £60k, but this should not preclude applicants for smaller sums.  More details on the application process can be found here.

About Us

The World’s first green electricity company:

Green Electricity didn't exist in the world back in 1996. When we offered it for the first time, we became not just Britain’s but the world’s first Green Electricity company – and we kick-started the now global Green Electricity movement. Our mission was and remains to change the way electricity is made and used in Britain.

We chose this focus because conventional electricity is responsible for 30% of Britain’s Carbon emissions – it’s our biggest single source as a nation – and therefore the biggest single thing we can change.

If you wish to compare electricity prices only click here

To Green Energy Company:

In 2010 we introduced the concept of Green Gas to Britain and in the process we evolved into a fully-fledged Green Energy company. It’s a pretty revolutionary idea – that we can make our own gas (from food waste) and put it into the national gas grid.

Our Model:

We operate a unique model. We use our customers’ energy bills to fund the building of new sources of green energy. We like to refer to this as turning ‘Bills into Mills’ – energy bills into windmills. We’re a not for dividend company – all of our profits go into our mission.

With no shareholders to answer to we’re free to dedicate ourselves to the task of building new sources of Green Energy. And that’s what we do, on average spending more each year per customer on new sources of Green Energy than any other energy company in Britain - bar none. And we share the benefits of our work through our EcoBonds initiative – giving people the chance to share the financial benefits of the Green Energy revolution.

Energy is the key:

Electricity is the biggest single source of carbon emissions in Britain – but it’s not the only one of course. The big three are Energy, Transport and Food. Between them accounting for 80% of all of our personal carbon footprints. The one thing they have in common is that Energy plays a vital role in them all. That’s why we extended our work beyond the boundaries of traditional energy companies.

In Transport we built the Nemesis Britain’s first electric super car – to demonstrate how cars of the future could actually be wind powered. Followed by our Electric Highway, the World’s first national network of charging stations - to kick-start the electric car revolution in Britain.

On the food front stay tuned for news of our Wind powered tractor and farm energy concepts.

Green Britain:

We do all this in pursuit of our vision for a Green Britain – A place in which we all live more sustainable lives and where ethical business is the norm – pursuing outcomes other than profit. And we do it all with the support of our customers.

Dale Vince OBE, Ecotricity founder

Our History

It’s been a pretty eventful journey. From that first windmill, back in 1996 - follow our interactive timeline below to discover what we did, and when.

Ecotricity History - 1995

Dale was on the verge of building his first windmill, five years after starting out he realised that one the big obstacles to building more windmills was the need to get a fair price for the electricity. He went to meet the MEB, who were at that time the local monopoly energy company – they laughed at the idea of green electricity and basically offered the kind of price monopolies do – a rubbish one.

And so the idea was born, to cut out the middleman and start an energy company, to reach the end user with this new Green Electricity, to get a fair price – to enable windmill building.

The energy market was just being liberalised and for the first time it was possible to start an energy company and that’s just what we did.

We spent that first year (1995) studying the market and designing a new way to supply electricity – through a model we called ‘Embedded Supply’ basically using the local grid to match local customers to local generation. Sounds obvious enough, but it had never been done before.

Our Eco Credentials

Ecotricity’s purpose in life is the environment. We’re here to promote sustainable living in all it’s forms.

Our major activity is changing the way energy is made and used in the UK. And even though windmills save carbon we know that our operations have an impact.

We don’t just ‘try’ to reduce our impact or ‘pledge’ to; we’re working on it all the time. It’s just what we do, it’s in our DNA.

If you wish to compare electricity only prices click here

Team Eco

We’re all about the Green Energy Revolution of course. But we’re also about ethics and sustainability and putting them at the heart of business and of life (we don’t see a distinction).

Part of our work is to challenge the way people perceive the notion of greenness or green living – the idea that it’s all about giving stuff up, about lentils and sandals (though we love both). Our work is about showing that sustainable living is something both feasible and fun – where we can maintain the kind of lifestyle we’re used to, through intelligent use of technology and changing behaviour.

This leads us to be involved in all sorts of things, from football clubs to Eco centres and habitat creation and we work with lot’s of like-minded companies. Together we’re a team, all working to bring sustainability into the mainstream. Together we’re Team Eco.

Generating 10 percent of the UK's electricity..cleanly, efficiently, reliably

E.ON UK's generation business is involved in every link of the energy chain, producing electricity from a portfolio of world-class power stations and researching new technologies to meet the needs of our customer base.

Generation

Our diverse portfolio of 10 coal, gas and oil-fired power stations generates around 10 percent of the UK's electricity using some of the most advanced technologies in the world.

We also own and operate one of the UK’s leading green generation businesses. Producing enough green power to supply the homes of a city the size of Manchester, our renewables portfolio is made up of 20 operational wind farms, an extensive biomass co-firing programme and one of the UK’s largest dedicated biomass power stations. We’ve started building the world’s largest offshore wind farm, London Array in the Thames Estuary and are developing further renewable projects that could supply the needs of over a million homes.

We’re also one of the biggest names in large-scale Combined Heat and Power, with 13 sites across the UK from Kent to Cumbria.

E.ON Climate and Renewables

In the UK our focus is on wind, both onshore and offshore, dedicated biomass and marine. Currently, we have 18 operational onshore and three offshore wind farms. In 2007 we completed construction on one of the UK’s largest dedicated biomass power stations, the award winning Steven’s Croft in Lockerbie. Robin Rigg, our third and largest offshore wind farm in the UK located in the Solway Firth, became operational in 2010.

We’re partners in the world’s largest offshore wind farms, London Array and have gained planning consent for a 230MW offshore wind farm, Humber Gateway, off the east coast of Yorkshire. We are also looking to develop new projects, further offshore and in deeper water, via The Crown Estate’s Round 3 process.

Our onshore business has a sizeable pipeline of projects being developed which will significantly increase our presence in this area. And in the biomass arena we have received consent for our second biomass power station, Blackburn Meadows in Sheffield, and are exploring further opportunities across the UK.

In 2010, we installed our first wave energy device, the next generation Pelamis Wave Energy Converter at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney. We’re the first utility company to test a marine energy device at EMEC, which is the only grid connected marine test facility in Europe. The success of this project should give us the confidence to move on to the next phase of marine energy development, which is to install larger arrays around the UK coastline, like our proposed Orkney Waters Wave Farm projects.

EC&R brings together all activities relating to the operation and development of renewable energy within the E.ON Group. For more information please visit our EC&R site.
